Why Do I Have Sand In My Water?

There are many reasons that could cause sand to appear in your water, here are a few of those reasons:

1. Construction of the Well

When a water well is constructed, it is packed with gravel. It is essential to choose the correct size of gravel. The gravel pack serves as a sand filter, so if the gravel is the wrong size, that would cause the sand to enter your water. To fix this issue you would need to add a filtration system or you could change the depth setting of the pump. If the sand is too much, the only way to solve this problem would be to replace the well.

2. The Pump

If your pump is not running smoothly and it is vibrating that would cause sand to enter your water. Worn bearings are the cause of a vibrating pump. The only way to solve this issue is to replace the pump.

3. The Pressure Tank

If there is not enough air in your pressure tank, that could cause your pressure tank to become water logged. In the new style of pressure tanks, there is a part called a bladder. When your bladder ruptures you have too much water in your tank causing the pump to short cycle. This causes vibrations shaking the sand into the water. The solution to this is to replace the pressure tank.

4. A Hole in the Drop Pipe

When the pump is pumping and there is a hole in the pipe it causes water to jet through perforations and stir up sand. When the water jets like this, it can also cause separation in the gravel packs, which would also create sand to enter into your water. The solution here would be to replace the pipe where the hole occurs.
